#StormTop10 Individual Performances No. 8: Johnston scores top-10 upset
The Storm wrestling team faced a tall task when defending national champion Wartburg came to Cowles Fieldhouse to open the 2016-17 Iowa Conference season on Nov. 16. Although the Knights prevailed, Simpson fans saw their 141-pounder put on a show against one of the top wrestlers in the nation.
In the third match of the night, junior Zach Johnston squared off against seventh-ranked connor Campo, a two-time All-American. Campo's lofty ranking didn't deter Johnston, who did more than beat Campo -- he majored him. Johnston led from wire-to-wire, getting an early takedown and never looking back.
Johnston scored five takedowns in the match and got a reversal in the closing seconds to seal with upset.
"He wrestled his match for seven minutes," head coach Nate Hansen said after the dual. "It was a very entertaining match, I thoroughly enjoyed it and it made my night. It didn't surprise me at all."
Though an injury cut his season short, Johnston went on to a 12-8 record on the year.
