Distance runners, throws kick off first day of home meet

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson College women's track and field team opened the Kip Janvrin Open with its distance runners and throws taking center stage.

The majority of the success came in the 1,500 meters, with Lara Kallem taking ninth overall in a time of 4:43.72, a new personal best. Kallem also won her heat by outkicking the field over the final 100 meters.

The majority of the rest of the 1,500 meters set either a personal or season best, with Teghan Booth running under the five-minute barrier as well, in a time of 4:51.07.

Emily Erhardt and Aaliyah Johnson claimed top 10 finishes in their respective events. Erhardt took 10th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 11:52.85, while Johnson placed ninth in the javelin with a toss of 29.86 meters.

The Storm resume competition tomorrow at 11 a.m. Maddie Hays will run in the 400 meter hurdles at the Drake Relays at approximately 2 p.m.
