Kallem, Booth both break 5,000 meter school record

BOSTON - Lara Kallem and Teghan Booth both broke the previous indoor 5,000 meter school record in the opening event of the prestigious David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston.

Kallem adds to her school record collection, clocking a time of 17:21.24 to beat the previous record set by Jen Wendt in 2006 by 30 seconds. Kallem now owns the school record in the indoor and outdoor 5,000 meters, as well as the indoor 3,000 meters.

Booth also broke Wendt's previous school record, running a time of 17:34.30. Booth now sits in second all-time in school history in the 5,000 meters, while also being third in school history in the 3,000 meters.

"Lara and Teghan were both incredible," said Storm director of track and field and cross country Heath Moenck. "The goal for both of them was to re-write the history book and we are proud that they successfully did that."

Kallem finished third in the heat consisting of 28 runners, while Booth took eighth. Kallem also had the fastest close of all runners in the heat and the second-fastest across all 53 runners in both heats, running the final 200 meters in a blistering 36.88.

While Kallem and Booth will not run in any additional races in Boston, Max Cleveland and Spencer Moon will compete in Boston tomorrow for the men. The rest of the Storm roster will be in Grinnell tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
