First-half goal holds up, Storm earn shutout win

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Sometimes it pays to be in the right place at the right time.

Cami Schmalz did just that Tuesday night, scoring the first goal of her career in a mad scramble in the box to lift the Simpson women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Monmouth (Ill.)

Riley Adams made five saves to turn in her first clean sheet and the Storm (1-3) backline held Monmouth to eight shots, two in the second half. The Fighting Scots (3-2) had scored 19 goals in the previous four games.

Key Moment
• Just over 31 minutes into the first half, Monmouth goalkeeper Kensey Arlt left her post in an effort to collect a cross by the Storm. She bobbled the ball, then made a diving effort to secure it. Schmalz took advantage of the chaos and buried her first career goal.

Notes
• Simpson took a season-high 10 shots Tuesday night, getting three from Taylor Sudman and two each from Schmalz, Dani Marquez and Maddie Simmons.

• Tuesday marked the first-ever meeting between Simpson and Monmouth, but the Storm improved to 17-13-1 all-time against teams currently affiliated with the Midwest Conference.

• The Storm got their first shutout of the season, lowering their goals against average to 1.25.
