Storm compete at Luther Open

DECORAH, Iowa — The Simpson wrestling team took part in its first tournament of the season Saturday, competing at the always-tough Luther Open.

Colby Vlieger had a busy day, posting a team-high four wins in the 285-pound bracket of the Elite Division. DeVaughn Scott went 2-2 at 197 pounds and 184-pounder Noah Robinson placed sixth in the Silver Division. Clayton Fenzl and Sam Mathis had two wins apiece.

Vlieger posted three pins on the day and lost by a combined four points in two decisions. He started the day by pinning Gerardo Suarez (William Penn) in 1:16 before losing a close 7-6 decision to Brennan Koeperich (Coe). He responded with back-to-back first-period pins before losing a 6-3 decision to Tyler Ortmann (Cornell) to end his day.

Scott lost his first match of the day before rattling off consecutive wins, including a 7-5 win in sudden victory over Bowen Wilemann (Wartburg). His day ended with a narrow 3-2 loss to Andrew Holladay (Coe).

Robinson was the lone placewinner for the Storm, going 2-3 in the Silver Division. He won his first two matches -- including a pin over Sam Simpson (Nebraska Wesleyan) -- to advance to the semifinals. He lost his next three contests, falling to sixth.
