Storm win four in loss to Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Jason Kiehne won his sixth match in a row but the Simpson wrestling team didn't have enough firepower in a 29-19 loss to Dubuque on Saturday.

Jake Mize, Sam Mathis and Colby Vlieger also earned wins for the Storm (5-8, 1-5 Iowa Conference). The dual was originally scheduled to take place Jan. 10 but was postponed due to winter weather.

Kiehne improved to 7-1 in the second semester with a 12-1 major decision over Jeremy Melendez at 141. He led 2-1 after the first period but outscored Melendez 10-0 the rest of the way to improve to 17-8 on the season.

Mize pinned Jared Packer less than a minute into the second period at 165, earning his fourth straight win and third-straight by fall.

Vlieger edged Jordan Hill 4-3 at 285, snapping a three-match losing streak to pick up his team-leading 20th win of the season. Vlieger's third-period escape ended up being the difference in a tightly-contested match.

Sam Mathis earned Simpson's other win with mid-match injury forfeit. He led Dominic Sterr before Sterr sustained an injury in the second period and couldn't continue.
