Vlieger's pin powers Storm to dramatic win over Buena Vista

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Colby Vlieger pinned Anthony Ossman in the final match and the Simpson wrestling team beat Buena Vista in dramatic fashion, 23-21 on Friday night inside the Kent Campus Center.

The Storm (6-8, 2-5 Iowa Conference) didn't take the lead until the final whistle blew, trailing 21-17 going into Vlieger's match at 285 pounds. Simpson was down 18-8 with four matches to go, getting two technical falls to give Vlieger a chance.

RJ Brown got a 21-5 technical fall over Kevin Pape at 174 and Noah Robinson beat Lavaris Preston 15-0 at 184. Sam Mathis lost a narrow 5-4 decision at 197, leaving Simpson trailing by four. The Storm were deducted one team point earlier in the dual.

Needing a bonus-point win to earn at least a tie, Vlieger got a takedown almost immediately. He finally got Ossman on his back a little over 2 minutes in and stuck the pin at 2:13, sending the crowd inside the Black Box Theater into a frenzy.

Simpson finished with three technical falls, getting the first from Jason Kiehne at 141. Kiehne beat Carson Rhoads 18-1, extending his winning streak to seven and moving his overall record to 18-8.

Jason Clark picked up a crucial decision at 157, getting an escape in the final 15 seconds to beat Brad Kerkhoff 6-4.
