Brus and the Barbers get wins in 22-11 loss to Cornell

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Calvin Barber's 3-0 decision over Zach Wilson at 157 pounds brought Simpson to within two points of No. 9 Cornell at intermission, but the Storm could get no closer as the Rams won the season-opening Iowa Conference dual for both teams, 22-11 Tuesday night at Hopper Gymnasium.

In addition to Barber's decision, the Storm (0-1, 0-1 IIAC) got wins at 141 and 184 pounds from Caleb Brus and Curtis Barber, respectively.

Timothy Hood (125) and Tigue Snider (133) picked up wins in the first two matches as the Rams (1-1, 1-0 IIAC) got out to an early 7-0 lead.

Brus tallied Simpson's first points of the dual when he scored a major decision over Cornell's Michael Buhr at 141-pounds, improving his record this season to 5-0 and narrowing Cornell's lead to 7-5.

Barber notched his second win of the season with an 11-9 decision over Cliff Robertson at 184 pounds. Barber led 4-3 going into the third period and built an 8-5 lead with his fourth takedown of the frame before Robertson fought back to tie the match, 9-9. Barber got a late escape and tacked on a point for riding time to secure the win.

Barber's win made the score 16-11 in favor of Cornell entering the 197-pound match between Simpson's Trent VanDorin and Cornell's Andrew Roberts. In a tight match, it was Roberts' late escape that gave him a 5-4 win and secured the victory for Cornell.

At 174 pounds, Jordy Ammons dropped a tough, overtime decision to Alex Riniker, 3-1. Wade Dowling held a 3-1, third-period lead over Jacob Schwebke before an escape and a takedown allowed Schwebke to claim a 4-3 win at 149 pounds.

Simpson returns to tournament action Saturday, Nov. 21 when it travels to the Augsburg open in Minneapolis. The tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m.
