Simpson takes eighth at IIAC Championships

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Freshman 133-pounder Jeff Sand led Simpson with a team-best fourth place showing at the 2010 Iowa Conference Wrestling Championships, as Simpson finished the day tied for eighth with host Buena Vista (48).

Sand, who entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed, advanced in his first match due to a forfeit, before losing to top-seeded Sean White of Wartburg. In the consolation bracket, Sand picked up a hard-earned 2-1 decision over the No. 6 seed, Ryan Capouch of Luther. In another tight match, Sand found himself on the losing end of the third-place match, dropping a 5-0 decision to third-seeded Drew Hinschberger of Coe.

The Storm's winningest wrestler of the year, 141-pounder Caleb Brus finished in sixth. He lost his first match to the No. 4 seed Kevin Bokoski of Luther  before defeating Derick Smith of Dubuque by technical fall. Brus then fell to third-seeded Matt Kelly of Wartburg, 4-0, and lost another tight match to Matt Holmes of Loras, 8-6.

Jordy Ammons also placed sixth, upsetting fourth-seeded Joseph Hambleton of Cornell in the first match, 11-10. Ammons then fell to the top seed, Evan Brown of Dubuque, before falling to Nate Tool of Buena Vista, 10-6. In the fifth-place match, Ammons again met Hambleton, this time surrendering a one-point decision, 5-4.
