Nelson named IIAC, Liberal Arts Swimmer of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Simpson's Noah Nelson took home two weekly accolades for his remarkable performance in the season-opener at Nebraska Wesleyan, earning Iowa Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week honors in addition to being named the Liberal Arts Championships Swimmer of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Oct. 22, as announced earlier this week.

A freshman from Tulsa, Okla., Nelson broke three school records and won two individual events in his collegiate debut at Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Nelson set school records in the 1,000 freestyle, the 200 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley, winning the 1,000 free and the 200 breaststroke while taking second in the medley. He also swam on Simpson's second-place 200 freestyle relay team.

Nelson's biggest record came in the 1,000 freestyle, where he touched the wall in 10:16.73 to crush the previous record of 11:08.64 set by James Tillison in 2012-13. His other records came in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.00) and the 200 IM (2:02.22).

Nelson teamed up with Noah Bruns, Nick Keller and Ryan Gaumer to place second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Nelson is the first men's swimmer in school history to earn the Liberal Arts Conference Swimmer of the Week honor.
