Nelson breaks school record on day one at Grinnell Invitational

GRINNELL, Iowa — Noah Nelson broke another school record and Nick Keller and relay teams each grabbed a pair of top-10 placements to lead the Simpson men's swimming and diving team to sixth place on the first day of the Grinnell Invitational on Friday, Jan. 19.

The Storm accumulated 193 points after day one placing them sixth out of seven teams.

Nelson broke his own school record in the 500 freestyle set earlier this year set back on the second meet of the year against Coe. Nelson's third place finish with a time of 4:53.07 beat his previous time (4:53.47) by .4 seconds.

Nelson also placed second in the 200 breastroke with a time of 2:12.82, the best finish of the day for the Storm.

Simpson's other individual top-10 finishes come from Keller during day one. Keller finished seventh in the 100 IM with a time of 59.22 and eighth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.04.

The 200 freestyle and 800 freestyle teams round out the Storm's top finishes of the day. The 800 freestyle relay team of Keller, Noah Bruns, Sam Law and Nelson finished at 7:49.52 in seventh place, a mere 1.1 seconds from the school record. The 200 freestyle relay team of Bruns, Ryan Gaumer, Nelson and Keller finished in ninth place with a time of 1:32.83.

The Storm continue the Grinnell Invitational on Jan. 20.
