Swimming and diving teams get first wins of 2014-15

BELOIT, Wis. - The Simpson swimming and diving teams earned their first wins of the season on Saturday at the Beloit/Ripon double dual. The men went 2-0, beating Beloit 71-50 and Ripon 64-51. The women split, beating Beloit 70-51 falling to Ripon 79-41.

In all, the Storm combined for a total of 15 top-two finishes, getting seven first-place efforts and eight second-place efforts.

James Tillison and Kyle McKim led the Storm with two individuals wins apiece.

Tillison dominated the distance events, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:03.27) and hammering out a first-place finish in the 500 free (5:38.86). McKim put on a show in the breaststrokes, winning the 100 (1:04.73) and 200 (2:26.75).

Simpson also got individual wins from Cody Carlson and Nathan Schneider. Carlson won the 200 freestyle (1:56.43) while Schneider touched the wall first in the 200 individual medley (2:17.58).

Schneider, Carlson and Tillison joined Scott Wailes to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.75), giving the Storm six wins on the day.

Women's Recap | Simpson 70, Beloit 51; Ripon 79, Simpson 41

Katherine Rubins gave the Storm their lone win of the day while Simpson added seven, second-place efforts.

Rubins earned her first win of the season, turning in a season-best time of 6:14.24 to win the 500-yard freestyle.

Megan Buitendorp added two, second-place efforts and helped two relays to runner-up finishes. Buitendorp placed second in both the 100 (1:07.78) and 200 backstroke (2:28.61) while helping the Storm to second in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. She teamed up with Haley Blum, Christina Amburgy and Tori Haag in the medley (2:03.65) and Amburgy, Haag and Erica Carlson in the freestyle (1:51.19).

Other women's highlights

  • Haag placed second in the 200 freestyle (2:13.74)
  • Alex Vander Veen placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:49.72)
  • Amburgy placed second in the 100 freestyle (59.50)

Simpson has 12 days off before attending their first multi-team meet of the season, the two-day Pioneer Classic Invitational in Grinnell, Iowa. The meet begins Friday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. and continues Saturday at 10 a.m.
