Swimming and diving teams close season with record-setting day at LACs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- The Simpson swimming and diving teams set four school records and recorded eight season bests on the final day of the Liberal Arts Championships.

The women's team finished with a total of 142 points, landing them in eighth place out of 11 teams. The men's team finished eighth out of nine teams with a total score of 195.

MEN'S RECAP

Kyle McKim and Cody Carlson closed out the weekend with school records in the 200 breaststroke and 100 freestyle, respectively.

A day after winning an Iowa Conference Championship and setting a school record in the 100 breaststroke, McKim broke his own mark in the 200 on Saturday. The junior touched the wall in 2:15.11 to set the mark in the prelims, then went on to place 11th in the consolation finals (2:15.84).

Carlson set the school mark in the 50 freestyle on Friday and added the 100 on Saturday. His 49.23 in the consolation finals placed him 13th overall lowered the school record.

McKim and Carlson teamed up with Nathan Schneider and Scott Wailes to set a third school record in the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome finished in 3:23.03, breaking the record of 3:26.57 set earlier this season.

JJ Hansen broke his own school record in 1-meter diving, tallying a score of 290.35 in the preliminaries. He scored 288.15 in the finals to place third overall, the only conference finisher in the event.

WOMEN'S RECAP

Haley Blum recorded the team's top individual finish on the day, placing 14th in the 200 breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:41.20. She also joined Tori HaagErica Carlson and Megan Lein in the ninth-place 400 freestyle relay team, anchoring the quartet to season-best time of 3:23.03.

Haag had another big day, swimming a season-best time of 57.46 in the 100 freestyle to place 16th.
