Coe beats Simpson men, 79-65

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Max Schmarzo had 21 points, Seth Light had 20 and Coe beat Simpson 79-65 in men's basketball on Monday night.

Schmarzo went 5-for-9 from beyond the arc and Light grabbed eight rebounds as the Kohawks (10-7, 3-3 Iowa Conference) shot nearly 52 percent from the field on the way to snapping a two-game losing streak.

Coe methodically built an 18-point first half lead with an inside-out attack featuring Schmarzo and Light. The preseason pick to win the Iowa Conference shot better than 53 percent in the opening period and never looked back, leading by as many as 24 in the second half.

Chris Zimmerman scored a team-high 11 points in his first career start, going 3-for-5 from 3-point range. AJ Arrington had 10 points and Elijah Knox had eight points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Storm (5-12, 1-5 Iowa Conference).

The game was the first for Coe head coach Bryan Martin against his former school, where he played and coached in the late 90s. Martin was a junior when Simpson won the conference title in 1998.

Simpson hosts Central on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. as part of a grueling, three-game week. The Dutch (9-7, 2-4) lost to Buena Vista 84-80 on Monday.
