Simpson comeback falls short against Grand View

DES MOINES, Iowa – Kody Ingle scored a game-high 23 points and Grand View held off a second-half comeback by the Simpson men's basketball team in a 58-46 win on Tuesday.

Charles Swain scored 14 for the Storm (1-2), who struggled out of the gates in digging a 20-point hole in the first half.

Trailing by 16 at halftime, Simpson went on a 10-0 run to start the second, pulling within 34-28 after a steal and a layup by Elijah Knox.

But Grand View answered the run and wouldn't allow Simpson to get any closer than six throughout the second half. Swain led a final push with six minutes left when his 3-point play made the score 49-43, but Simpson went scoreless for the next two minutes, effectively ending the hopes of a comeback.

Chad Mallow added 12 points for the Vikings (5-4), who have beaten the Storm the last three years in a row. In the previous two wins, it was Grand View that had to come back from double-digit, first half deficits.

Austin Hennings finished with 13 points and Knox had eight and five steals for the Storm.

Leading 7-5 in the early going, a Mitch Fondell jumper started a 15-0 run for Grand View which resulted in a 22-7 lead. Simpson went nearly 7 minutes, 30 seconds without a point during the span.

Simpson goes to Lincoln, Neb. for the Snyder Classic hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan this weekend. Simpson faces the host Prairie Wolves on Friday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
