Dubuque snaps Simpson's winning streak

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Simpson men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday with a 75-67 loss to Dubuque.

Mitch Michaelis scored a game-high 24 points and Lee Piccinelli added 16 for the Spartans (13-5, 8-2 Iowa Conference). Michalis went 5-for-7 from 3-point range and David Kushnir chipped in 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Cornelius Mosby led the Storm (8-10, 5-5) with 19 points and 10 rebounds, his ninth double-double of the season. Chad Boston scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half and Zack Barragan was held under 10 points for only the second time this season, finishing with eight.

Simpson shot only 1 of 10 beyond the arc and was outrebounded 36-25.

The second 3-pointer of the night from Michaelis broke a 24-24 tie with 6:20 left in the first half and Dubuque never trailed again. The Spartans led by three at the break but outscored Simpson 18-8 in the opening minutes of the second half to extend the lead to 13.

Simpson led the game early, going up 15-9 just under five minutes into the game when Boston broke free for a fastbreak dunk. But a 3 by Michaelis on the next possession sparked an 11-2 Spartan run.

Simpson has nearly a week off before hosting Coe next Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Cowles Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast regionally on KCRG out of Cedar Rapids.
