No. 7: Zack Barragan breaks career 3-point record

They called him Big Shot Barragan. If the game was on the line, there was little question as to who was getting the ball.

For the last four years, Storm basketball fans have had the good fortune of watching the signature jumper of Zack Barragan. It was silky-smooth and set apart by a slight fade away from the basket, making it an indefensible weapon. When he was rolling, he couldn’t be stopped.

The No. 7 top moment of the 2011-12 season came when Barragan set the school record for three-pointers in a career. On Jan. 11, the Storm traveled to Storm Lake looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Barragan put the team on his back, hitting a career-high seven 3s and scoring 27 points off 10-for-15 shooting in a 68-64 win over Buena Vista. Barragan upped his career total to 174 3-pointers in the process, surpassing the mark of 171 set by Jason Parkinson from 2003-07.

The Ankeny, Iowa product finished his career with 199 3-pointers and 1,083 points, He averaged 16.5 points per game in 2011-12, good for second in the Iowa Conference. He led the league with 72 3-pointers made and earned First Team All-Iowa Conference honors. He was named Iowa Conference Player of the Week and landed a spot on the D3hoops.com Team of the Week after leaving his mark on the Simpson record books.

Of all the memories Barragan helped create, maybe the most exciting came at the end of the 2010-11 season. Coming into the final game of the regular season against Cornell, the Storm needed a win to ensure a spot in the Iowa Conference Tournament. Trailing 75-74 with only seconds remaining, Barragan hit a runner from the right side as time expired to catapult Simpson into the postseason for the first time since 2007.
