Mosby leads Simpson All-IIAC selections

CEDAR RAPIDS - Cornelius Mosby earned second team All-Iowa Conference honors while Zack Barragan and Elijah Knox picked up honorable mention nods, the conference office announced Wednesday, March 2.

Mosby, a junior forward from Chicago, transferred to Simpson from Minnesota, Crookston for the second semester of the season. In 15 games, Mosby averaged 12.1 points per game and 9.1 rebounds. Despite missing the first 12 games of the season, his 33 blocked shots ranked second in the league.

A criminal justice major, Mosby posted four double-doubles in the last eight games and reached double figure points in each of the last nine. He etched his name in the Simpson record books on Feb. 9 when he brought down 24 rebounds in a 74-55 loss at Central. His effort on the glass tied a school record set during the 1958-59 season.

Barragan, a junior guard from Ankeny, Iowa, led the team and ranked among the conference-leaders in scoring with 12.5 points per game. His 61 3-pointers led the team and ranked third in the league, shooting 42.4 percent from beyond the arc.

An integrated marketing communication major, Barragan hit two, last-second game-winners during the season. On Jan. 26 he nailed a 15-footer on the baseline with 2 seconds left to cap a come-from-behind 67-66 win at Loras. He showed off his heroics to the home crowd in the regular season finale against Cornell on Feb. 19, when his runner as time expired gave the Storm a 76-75 win and ensured them a spot in the IIAC Tournament.

Knox, a sophomore point guard from Scottsdale, Ariz., ranked third in the league in assists (94) and tied for first in steals (50). His 1.36 assist-to-turnover ratio was fifth in the IIAC and he averaged 9.4 points per game.

A marketing major, Knox scored a career-high 19 points in a 77-65 loss to IIAC Champion Luther on Jan. 22. He handed out eight assists on three occasions during the year.

Simpson finished the 2010-11 season 12-15 under first-year head coach Charles Zanders, doubling last year's win total. The 12 wins marks the most since 2007 as the Storm made their first appearance in the IIAC Tournament since 2007. Simpson went 8-8 in league play and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament, where it lost to eventual champion Luther, 78-68.
