Coe holds off men's basketball down the stretch

CEDAR RAPIDS - Alex Tatman scored a game-high 19 points and Coe held off a late run by Simpson in a 75-68 win Saturday.

Tatman added seven rebounds and three assists, shooting 50 percent from the field to lead the Kohawks (4-2, 2-0 IIAC).

Sophomore guard Elijah Knox scored a career-high 17 points for the Storm (2-4, 1-1 IIAC), who put together a charge in the final minutes after trailing most of the second half.

A 3-point play by JJ Vanderheiden tied the game at 61 with just under three minutes remaining. After surrendering the momentum, Seth Hutcheson coverted a 3-point play of his own with 32 seconds left to come within three.

But the Kohawks made 6 of 8 free throws in the final 30 seconds, keeping Simpson at an arms length in the closing moments.

Knox added five assists and committed only two turnovers while making three steals. Stefon Brown added 16 points while Vanderheiden and Hutcheson added nine a piece.

Coe led by as much as 11 in the first half, but Knox sparked a Simpson run after a steal and a 3-point play off the ensuing fast break with 7:29 remaining in the period. A jumper by Brown as the clock expired brought the Storm within a point at the break.

Simpson opens a three-game homestand when Loras visits Cowles Fieldhouse on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
