Marquez scores in final seconds, Storm beat Nebraska Wesleyan 1-0

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Dani Marquez scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute as the Simpson women's soccer team beat Nebraska Wesleyan 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Marquez found the back of the net with just 12 seconds left in regulation to give Simpson its first three points in conference play. Cassidy Price got the sequence started by firing a shot that deflected off the crossbar to Marquez, who finished the opportunity.

The Storm are now 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the American Rivers Conference while the Prairie Wolves fall to 6-5 and 0-3 in the league.

Aspen Brockhouse made three saves between the posts to make her first career win a shutout.

Quotes from Coach Reinert

"I'm proud of how our team battled tonight. NWU has a strong group of players and we knew it would be a challenge to go on the road and earn a result.

"I thought our organization defensively in the first half was the difference today. We faced a serious headwind that dictated the match for the first 45. At halftime, the focus shifted to being the aggressor.

"It was a complete team effort, but several girls stepped up individually. The hard work displayed by Dani and Cass in the waning seconds rewarded our group with three important points."

Notes
  • Simpson was outshot 7-1 in the first half but evened the ledger at 4-4 in the second 45.
  • The win helped the Storm snap a six-game conference losing streak.
  • The goal by Dani Marquez is her first of the season but the fifth of her career, most among active Simpson players.
