Valiant effort comes up short in 1-0 loss to William Penn

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Raunice Butler scored the only goal of the game in the waning minutes, spoiling an otherwise stellar defensive effort, and William Penn beat the Simpson women's soccer team 1-0 on Tuesday at Buxton Stadium.

Butler connected on an open net goal in the 79th minute for the Statesmen (8-5-1), who increased their unbeaten streak to four games.

Graciela Belmontes started the sequence by putting a shot on goal that was saved by goalkeeper Zoe Seiler. As Butler tried to gain control of the deflection, Seiler tracked the the ball and nearly nabbed it from Butler. The Statesmen's leading goal-scorer was able to elude Seiler, though, and her shot just cleared the outstretched left foot of Maddie Simmons.

Dani Marquez took a team-high three shots and Aimee Shrock put two free kicks on frame for the tough-luck Storm (4-12), who suffered their second-straight one-goal loss at home. Seiler made eight saves between the posts.

News & Notes
• Seiler made eight-or-more saves for the fifth time in eight games since moving into the starting role.
• Simpson's 10 shots are tied for the most by the team in a losing effort this season.
