Women's soccer battles in loss to Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - Ashley Kerns broke a scoreless tie in the 52nd minute and Wartburg went on to beat the Simpson women's soccer team 2-0 on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Stephanie Cox made 10 stops for the Storm (4-14-1, 2-3-1 Iowa Conference) who, despite the loss, played one of their best games of the season.

"Despite the result, I thought this was our most complete game of the year," head coach Ryan Sander said. "We had some good chances early in the game, we just have to start capitalizing on them."

Both of Simpson's shots on goal came in the first half. Maddie Thomas had the first, just 48 seconds into the game, and Heather Adolph provided the other, coming in the 42nd minute. Wartburg goalkeeper Sophie Perez saved both.

Adolph led Simpson with two shots as the Storm were outshot 22-4, including 17-1 in the second half.

Brittany Frush scored the second goal of the game for the Knights (7-9-1, 4-1).

The Storm, who are already locked into the conference tournament field, close the regular season against Dubuque on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 4:30 p.m.
