Close matches unkind to Storm in loss to Central
INDIANOLA, Iowa — Colby Vlieger earned a win at 285 pounds but the Simpson wrestling team came up on the wrong side several close matches, losing to No. 20 Central 37-3 on Thursday in Hopper Gymnasium.
The Storm (6-9, 2-6 Iowa Conference) lost three matches by two points in the final dual of the season. The 20th-ranked Dutch (10-2, 6-2) won by decision in five of nine contested matches.
Vlieger closed the dual season with a 22-10 mark by edging Jaime Miranda 2-1 in the final match of the night. The senior carried a 1-0 lead into the third period before giving up an escape to start the final 2 minutes. After Miranda received two stalling warnings, Vlieger picked up the penalty point to secure the win in the closing seconds.
Jason Kiehne (141), Anthony Derrick (149) and Jason Clark (157) all lost two-point decisions.
Looking for his eighth consecutive win, Kiehne got down 7-0 against Daniel Radcliffe before getting two takedowns and two escapes to pull within 7-6. Radcliffe scored an escape in the third and Kiehne was unable to get another takedown.
Derrick and Jordan Challen did all of ther scoring in the first period. Challen scored an early takedown and Derrick escaped but neither wrestler got on the board again until Challen received a point for riding time in the 3-1 win.
Clark trailed 5-2 in the third period before getting a takedown to pull within one. Jeremy Vester got an escape and avoided Clark's shots in the closing seconds, holding on for a 6-4 win.
