Simpson second after day one of IIAC Championships
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Thanks to a trio of top-10 performances in round one of the IIAC Championships the Simpson women's golf team is currently tied for second-place trailing only defending IIAC champion, Wartburg.
Led by their stable of seniors Jennifer Gaffney (80), Stacy Bergeson (83) and Jessica Lerdal (85), the Storm tackled the par 72, 5,867 yard Pheasant Ridge course with authority. Senior Molly Hill (96) and sophomore Holly Baiotto (105) rounded out the rest of the Simpson varsity as they attempt to improve upon their third place IIAC finish a year ago. It will be no easy task as Wartburg (314), owner of five top-10 finishers through round one, holds a sizable lead over Simpson (344), Central (344), and Luther (345). Gaffney will also have to climb her way back to the top as she trails a pair of Wartburg underclassmen (both 74) in pursuit of her second straight IIAC medalist honor.
The Storm will finish up their second round on Saturday at Pheasant Ridge then travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa next Friday and Saturday to compete in the final two rounds of the 2013 IIAC Championships held at the Elmcrest Country Club.
