Shooting sports has success at NCSSAA Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Simpson College shooting sports team wrapped up its 2022-23 season at the National Collegiate Shooting Sports Athletics Association (NCSSAA) Championships this past weekend.

The NCSSAA Championships took place at the Clark County Shooting Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. from March 14-18. Participating teams were broken up into five divisions and Simpson competed in Division III against Schreiner University.

Breydon Paxson captured two individual titles and Anna Lopez added a third to lead the Storm. Paxson won his first title on Wednesday with a 96 in Doubles Trap and then turned in a perfect score of 100 in Saturday's American Trap discipline for a second crown. In the same event, Lopez scored a 95 to win the individual women's title.

Lopez also added a runner-up finish in the women's High Overall, which combines scores from American Trap, American Skeet and Sporting Clays. The senior's cumulative score was 268, fueled by a 97 in American Skeet which claimed third place on the women's side. Lopez also won shootouts in both Super Sporting and Sporting Clays, earning second and third place, respectively.

Kylie Tierney and Victoria Barksdale earned individual trophies throughout the week as well. Tierney placed third on the women's side in American Trap (92), while Barksdale finished third in Doubles American Trap (86).

As a team, the Storm finished runner-up to the Mountaineers in all seven disciplines. Simpson posted its highest score of the Championships in American Trap with a 481 out of 500.

At the conclusion of the event, head coach Dan Martin was named NCSSAA Coach of the Year for Division III. Martin has led the Storm since the team's inception in 2018.
