Kalinay named Track Athlete of the Year to lead Storm at IIACs

PELLA, Iowa -- Dylan Kalinay won three championships to earn Track Athlete of the Year honors and the 4x400-meter relay successfully defended its conference championship for the Simpson men's track and field team Saturday at the Iowa Conference Indoor Championships.

Kalinay helped the 4x200-meter relay to a championship on Friday, won the 60 hurdles and open 200 on Saturday and added a runner-up finish in the open 60 meters to become just the second IIAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in school history and first since Joe Farrand in 2013.

Simpson placed sixth in the team standings with 84 points.

The senior set an IIAC Championship record in the 60 hurdles (8.20) and a facility record in the 200 meters (22.51). He added a runner-up effort in the open 60 meters (7.00).

Travis Tupper, Emmitt Wheatley, Chase Wetterling, and Jordan Coughenour set a facility record in the 4x400, running 3:24.44 to defend their title from a year ago.

Sam Adeniyi placed third to earn All-Conference honors in the heptathlon, scoring 628 points. He won the 60-meter hurdles in the heptathlon, tying the IIAC Championship record (8.58) and setting a new facility record. He also scored points in the 60 hurdles, taking eighth.

Coughenour picked up All-Conference honors in the 400 with a third-place finish, running 50.49. Wetterling placed sixth in 50.75.

Isaiah Strong placed third in the high jump with a clearance of 6-feet, 5 1/2 inches, tying his season best and earning All-Conference honors.
