Storm do battle with Loras in home opener

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Both the Storm men and women's swimming and diving team faced off against Loras in each's home opener, with the women claiming victory, Saturday, at the Indianola YMCA.

The day was highlighted by Emma Owen claiming three first-place wins in each of her three events. Owen started her day with a win in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, winning by 40 seconds over second place with a time of 11:56.18. Owen then dropped into a lesser distance, winning the 200 Yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:30.33. She then went back up to the 500 Yard Freestyle, being the only swimmer to go under six minutes.

Katie Oosterhuis excelled on the diving board and in the pool. Oosterhuis won the 1 Meter Diving competition with a score of 160.45 before becoming the first Simpson woman to compete in the 3 Meter Diving competition, posting a score of 175.75. She then swam the second leg in Simpson's victory in the 200 Yard Freestyle Team Relay. Kate Minette also won the women's 50 and 100 Yard Freestyles, continuing off her fine performances last season.

"We've got a great group of sprinters and distance swimmers, and they really showcased themselves today," said head coach Adam Cvetich. "It's always a thrilling time watching some good races, today was a little extra special as we were able to record our first dual meet win together on the women's side."

On the men's side, Jay Ceperley won the men's 100 Meter Butterfly with a time of 56.78, improving on his time from two weeks ago by over two seconds. Adrell Mulgrew-Truitt also won the men's 50 Meter Freestyle in a highly competitive race, while Nathan Perkins matched his times from A-R-C competition last year in the 200 Yard Medley Relay.

"We have a great young core group of swimmers, some of whom have already gone and swam personal best times," said Cvetich. "Jay Ceperley dropped two seconds from our first meet in the 100 fly, as he just flat out just got up and went after it and had a great swim. In the 200 Medley Relay, Nathan Parkins was able to match a time from our A-R-C competition last year, and for him to be matching that this early in the season is exciting. Very eager to see how they do when we get a chance to rest up and really go fast later this season."
