Storm close season at Liberal Arts Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Another day, another Simpson College swimming and diving record falls by the hands of junior Alyssa Harris.

Harris and the Storm competed for the last time this season on the third and final day of the Liberal Arts Championships on Saturday. Both the men and women ended fifth while competing in the Coe Natatorium.

In yesterday's events, Harris clipped her own record in the 200-yard individual medley and today, she etched her name atop the record books in the 400-yard individual medley. Harris finished third with a time of 4:56.73 to pass Tori Haag's mark of 4:57.96 set on Feb. 12, 2016.

Freshman Katie Oosterhuis tallied Simpson's best result at the championships with a runner-up performance in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:06.58 for a season best. Sophomore Riley Reece finished near her teammate at fifth in the race.

Seniors Madison DePover and Katie Cardoza finished back-to-back in the 1650-yard freestyle with fifth and sixth-place performances, respectively. Harris ended seventh in the 200-yard backstroke for another top-10 effort.

Senior Blake Kakacek recorded seventh in the 200-yard backstroke for a career-best time of 2:15.21.

The quartet of Caroline Oberg, Sarah Prendergast, Harris and Oosterhuis ended fifth in the 200-yard medley relay. Prendergast, DePover, Harris and Oberg worked together for Simpson's second fifth-place result in a relay, this time in the 400-yard freestyle.
