Simpson holds senior night for five swimmers

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The season opener for the Simpson College swimming and diving teams also served as senior night for five swimmers on Friday; Katie Cardoza, Madison DePover, Angela Eppens, Blake Kakacek and Sarah Prendergast.

The Storm hosted the College of Saint Mary and Nebraska Wesleyan inside the Indianola YMCA for the lone home meet of the season. The women won 84-53 over the Flames, while the Prairie Wolves prevailed, 118-55, over Simpson. On the men's side, the Storm lost to Nebraska Wesleyan.

Alyssa Harris and DePover collected two second-place finishes to lead Simpson, while Cardoza produced one. DePover competed in the 1000-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke in her last home competition of her career. Harris swam in the 200-yard individual medley relay and 100-yard backstroke, while Cardoza was in the 500-yard freestyle.

Both of Simpson's relay teams picked up second-place nods, coming in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays. Caroline Oberg, Katie Oosterhuis, Harris and Prendergast teammed up in the 200-yard medley to hit the wall in 2:05.91. The quartet of Prendergast, Oosterhuis, DePover and Oberg clocked a time of 1:57.40 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Oosterhuis competed in her first collegiate meet tonight as the only freshman for the Storm. In individual events, the Des Moines native finished third in the 100-yard butterfly to clip her teammate, Riley Reece.

On the men's side, Kakacek tallied second, third and fourth place to cap off his home career. The Sioux City native trimmed two seconds off last year's best in the 100-yard butterfly and one second off in the 50-yard freestyle.
