Schmitt records second Academic All-America honor for Storm baseball program

AUSTIN, Texas -- Simpson College baseball player Truman Schmitt earned Academic All-America® honors for his efforts during the 2020 season, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday. Schmitt becomes just the second player in program history and first since 1991 to earn the honor.

Schmitt, a senior catcher, lands on the second team after hitting .407 with 11 hits, three home runs and eight RBIs in just seven games. In the classroom, the Hinton, Iowa native carried a 3.97 cumulative GPA as an actuarial science major. His GPA tied for first among the 11-member second team, one of only nine players with at least a 3.97 GPA out of the 33 individuals comprising the first, second and third teams.

Throughout a decorated career, Schmitt amassed 109 hits — including 24 doubles and 12 homers — to go along with a .314 batting clip. Following a stellar junior season in 2019, Schmitt became only the second player in team history to land on both the D3baseball.com and American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Region teams. He was a 2019 American Rivers All-Conference Second Team performer as a designated hitter, a two-time A-R-C All-Academic selection and a four-year letterwinner for head coach Nathan Roling.

Schmitt is the lone representative from the nine-team A-R-C on the 2020 Academic All-America Baseball Team. He joins Kevin Burns as the only other Academic All-American in Simpson baseball history. Burns earned second team honors in 1991 under longtime head coach and athletic director, John Sirianni.

Schmitt and men's basketball player Conor Riordan make up the Storm's Academic All-America selections for the 2019-20 season.
