Storm baseball's Schmitt earns Academic All-District accolade

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Simpson baseball senior Truman Schmitt has been selected to the Academic All-District 8 First Team to become the program's first honoree since 2014, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday.

Schmitt was tabbed the catcher on the 11-man squad and is one of two student-athletes to be featured from the American Rivers Conference. The District 8 Team has players from Division III programs across 20 states and Canada.

2020 Academic All-District Baseball Team

Schmitt was batting .407 with 11 hits, three home runs and one double before the season was cancelled after seven contests. In 104 career games for the Storm, the Hinton, Iowa native batted .314 with 109 career hits. He displayed his power by ripping 24 doubles and 12 homers to drive in 66 runners.

At the end of Schmitt's junior season in 2019, he became just the second Simpson baseball player to be named to the D3Baseball.com and American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Region teams in the same season. He also earned All-American Rivers Conference Second Team honors as a designated hitter.

Schmitt held a 3.97 grade-point average as an actuarial science major for the Storm. He was placed on two academic all-conference squads for his efforts inside the classroom at the end of his sophomore and junior campaigns.

The 2020 Academic All-District® Baseball Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.

Honorees selected first-team Academic All-District® will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. Academic All-America® honorees will be announced from June 8-11.
