Slow start hurts Storm in loss to Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Kyle Alvarado drove in two runs on three hits, Thomas Schaedel threw seven scoreless innings and Coe used a three-run first inning to hand the Simpson baseball team a 7-2 loss in the series opener Friday night.

Jacob Burns and Ben Jacobson drove in two runs apiece as the Kohawks (17-11, 9-7 Iowa Conference) jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Coe started the game with four straight hits, including a leadoff double by Kevin DeLaney and an RBI triple from Alvarado. Schaedel (6-0) took it from there, scattering five hits without allowing a run.

Adam Richman scored on a wild pitch in the eighth and Nathan Carlin drove in a run on a double in the ninth for the Storm (5-23, 2-14), who were hurt by missed opportunities. Simpson had a chance to cut into Coe's 3-0 lead in the third but left the bases loaded when Schaedel struck out Hunter Hillygus. Simpson stranded nine runners on the game, including seven in scoring position.

Trey Kehoe (1-4) went six innings in the start, allowing six runs -- all earned -- on six hits. He struck out one and walked two.

Hillygus led off the second inning with a double but was stranded on third after an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play. In the fifth inning, Jared Herzog blasted a one-out triple only to be called out on appeal after missing first base.
