Simpson loses to AIB in home opener
INDIANOLA, Iowa – AIB plated six runs in the first three innings and never looked back, beating the Simpson baseball team 18-5 in the Storm's home opener Wednesday.
Jay Stout went 5-for-7 with four RBIs and five runs scored for AIB, which got out to a 3-0 lead after the first. Steven Leverett hit a two-run homer in the second and a wild pitch in the third allowed another run to score, making it 6-0. Leverett finished with four RBIs for the Eagles (5-12).
Simpson threw nine different pitchers in the game, but none had an answer for an AIB offense that tallied five extra-base hits, stole five bases and drew seven walks.
Jake Esdohr had two hits and Devan Wicks had two RBIs for the Storm (2-6).
Simpson trailed 6-0 in the third when Esdohr roped an RBI double and sacrifice flies by Wicks and Gage Reis cut the deficit to 6-3. That's as close as it got, though, as AIB responded with a two-run home run by Jacob Jouris in the fourth before getting a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to make it 10-3.
Zeb Noel took the loss, allowing three hits and three runs – all earned – in one inning of work.
