Grinnell hands Simpson non-conference loss

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Simpson baseball team traveled to Grinnell for a non-conference brush up Tuesday afternoon, falling 9-1.

The Storm (16-21) kept the game close through six, trailing 2-0 going into the seventh.

It was in the seventh and eighth innings where Grinnell did most of its damage. The Pioneers (14-15) scored three runs in the seventh followed by four in the eighth.

Jake Scieszinski (1-1) gave Simpson a quality start, going six innings and giving up two runs, one earned.  Although Simpson pitchers gave up only three earned runs, the Pioneers took advantage of four errors and stole four bases.

Simpson got on the board in the top of the ninth inning, when a Michael Chia single scored Taylor Nelson. Chia finished 1-for-4 and Nelson went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Neither the Pioneers nor the Storm managed extra-bases, as all 20 hits were singles.

Max Jacobson (1-3) had a strong outing for Grinnell, throwing seven innings of shut-out ball while striking out four.

Simpson travels to Dubuque on Friday to open a three-game series, at 3 p.m. The series concludes with a double-header Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
