Shoop resigns as women’s golf coach

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Larry Shoop has resigned as head coach of the Simpson women's golf team, Director of Athletics Bob Nutgrass announced.

"Larry has been a long-time outstanding coach with years of great golfers and outstanding young men and women," said Nutgrass. "He has been a wonderful part of our Simpson Athletic Family for years and he will truly be missed as one of our finest coaches. We wish Larry the best of luck as he pursues other endeavors in his future."

Shoop was hired as the women's coach following the 2014 spring season, which was his second stint at Simpson. The women's team received a fourth-place nod at the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships in 2017, their best finish with him at the helm and best since 2013 when the team ended in fourth.

Shoop previously served as the men's golf coach from 2002-08, where the team received three third-place finishes at the IIAC Men's Championship and had six all-conference performers on the individual side.

Shoop is a 1969 graduate of Buena Vista University and was a 30-year veteran of the United States Air Force, retiring in 1999 as a Chief Master Sergeant.

A national search is underway for Shoop's replacement.
