No. 1 - Women's basketball makes Sweet 16 appearance

Led by an MVP season from Kate Nielsen, the Simpson women's basketball team won a sixth-straight Iowa Conference Championship and made a ninth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Simpson beat Westminster and UW-Stevens Point at home in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament before falling to UW-Whitewater in the Sweet 16. Simpson tied a school-record for wins (27-3) and Nielsen was named 1 of 3 finalists for WBCA Player of the Year.

No. 2 - Niemuth earns win No. 500

Head women's basketball coach Brian Niemuth became the 20th 500-game winner in Division III history when Simpson beat Loras 75-62 on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Dubuque. He earned Iowa Conference and West Region Coach of the Year honors in the process and finished the season with a career 505-196 record.

No. 3 - Deja Vu: Football beats Wartburg on blocked PAT

Simpson came back from 13 down in the first half to beat Wartburg 20-19 on Sept. 29. Just as in 2011, the Storm used a blocked extra point - this time by senior Ben Borland with 37 seconds left in regulation - to knock off the Knights.

No. 4 - Multi-talented John Cord finds his niche

After participating in three sports, track and field multi-athlete John Cord settled on the decathlon, taking sixth place at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He became Simpson's first All-American decathlete since 1989.

No. 5 - Cowles/Carse renovation breaks ground

The athletic department in March broke ground on a $6 million renovation to the Cowles/Carse fitness facility that will result in a first-class, comprehensive fitness complex. The plans call for a new, 5,500-square-foot weight room, a 4,500-square-foot aerobic/cardiovascular space, an expanded wrestling room, a 1,500-square-foot cheer, dance and multipurpose room, a renovated Hall of Fame Conference Room and display, and more.

No. 6 - Joe Farrand named IIAC Track MVP

After battling through injuries for the early part of his career, sophomore Joe Farrand pulled off an impressive double by winning the 3,000 and 5,000 meters at the 2013 Iowa Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships en-route to earning Most Valuable Track Performer honors.

No. 7 - Lindsay Nash sets career doubles record

Senior Lindsay Nash set Simpson's career record for doubles wins in a career when she teammed up with Kelli Ehrhardt beat Grand View's No. 2 squad 8-1 on April 19, giving her 50 doubles wins for her career. She went 50-42 in her four years at Simpson.

No. 8 - Jennifer Gaffney wins IIAC golf title

Junior Jennifer Gaffney won medalist honors and was named Golfer of the Year after winning the 72-hole Iowa Conference Women's Golf Championship by two strokes. She brought home Simpson's 10th individual medalist title and first since 2004.

No. 9 - Softball upsets No. 9 Luther on the road

Simpson won in Decorah for the first time since 2005 when it swept league-leading and No. 9 Luther 7-2 and 12-4 on Saturday, April 20. Ashley Prettyman and Chelsea Winegard homered in game one, Britney Steele went deep and game two and the Storm saved their season with the sweep. After a quick start to the year, Simpson was just 2-6 in the month of April before closing the regular season on a six-game winning streak.

No. 10 - Men's soccer trips up Wartburg/Baseball comes back to beat Luther

On the pitch, Marcus Varnum scored the game-winner in the 69th minute as the fifth-seeded Storm knocked off the fourth-seeded Knights 1-0 in the first round of the IIAC Tournament. The win helped Simpson snap an 11-game winless streak against Wartburg and served as the high point of 13-8-1 campaign, the program's best record in 10 years.

The baseball team's mid-April series against Luther looked as though it would end in a wash. After sweeping the first two games of the series, Simpson lost Sunday's first game and trailed 7-0 through an inning and half in the series finale. But a monster effort from Tyler Craig and some timely hitting down the stretch helped the Storm erase the seven-run deficit and come back to win a 12-11 thriller to take the series, 3-1. Craig finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two home runs, the second of which provided the winning run in the seventh.
