Mathews records 3,000th assist at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Senior Alyssa Mathews handed out her 3,000th career assist Saturday for Simpson volleyball during a 3-0 loss at Dubuque.

Mathews finished the day with 24 assists after just needing four to break the 3,000 barrier to reach the milestone. Mathews has played in 103 matches over her four-year career and has averaged a little over 29 assists per match.

The Storm (8-15, 0-7 A-R-C) lost in straight sets by scores of 25-16, 25-12, 25-19 as the Spartans (18-10, 4-3 A-R-C) sit in third place in the conference standings after the win.

Hannah Lester had a game-high 16 kills by hitting .275. Niya Harris, Megan LeMay and Taylor Sudmann all added four kills apiece to help the offense secure 38 kills. Ariana Martinez had a game-high 18 digs for her 12th consecutive match with double-digit digs.

Simpson hit a .040 in the opening set on 12 kills and followed that with a .080 performance in the second set with 12 kills again. In the third and final frame, the Storm hit a .162 for their best clip of the match.

Dubuque hit .330 as a team with 34 kills during the conference victory.
