Volleyball closes regular season with five-set wins

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – After enduring a tough stretch at the end of the season, the Simpson volleyball team built some momentum going into next week's Iowa Conference Tournament by winning a pair of five-set matches to close out play on Saturday at the Barker Chevrolet Classic hosted by Illinois Wesleyan.

The Storm (16-13) beat Illinois Wesleyan (27-25, 25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 15-12) and Monmouth (25-22, 16-25, 25-13, 18-25, 15-13) to close the season on a high note after enduring a 10-match losing streak.

Simpson won its last three matches and will play Loras in the first round of the Iowa Conference Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Middle hitter Torey Buenger was named to the all-tournament team.

Simpson 3, Illinois Wesleyan 2
Tabitha Blaser had 22 kills and hit a scorching .396 to lead Simpson in the five-set win. She added 13 digs as the Storm needed to rally from back-to-back seven-point losses in sets three and four for the win. Kat Wetjen had 13 kills and Katie Kieffer handed out 49 assists. Kim Rogers led the back row with 22 digs.

Simpson 3, Monmouth (Ill.) 2
Blaser had another big effort with a team-high 18 kills. She led three players in double figures, as Buenger posted 14 kills and a .312 hitting percentage and Wetjen chipped in with 11 kills. Kieffer had 36 assists and Haley Danforth led the way with 18 digs.
