Degen leads Simpson at Wartburg Select

WAVERLY - Chelsey Degen provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the discus and Simpson placed 11th at the Wartburg Select on Saturday.

Simpson scored 29 points in the first competition of the outdoor season. Wartburg won the meet with 160.5 points.

Degen, a three-time participant in the discus at the NCAA Championships, placed second with a toss of 143 feet, 9 inches.

A 2010 All-American in the high jump, Kinsey Bak began the season with a second-place effort, clearing 5-3.

The Iowa Conference champion in the indoor 55-meter hurdles, Lauren Anderson turned in top-six performances in the 100 and 400-meter hurdles. She took fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.23) and sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:06.03). Her time in the 400 hurdles was a career-best.

Molly Sabers added an eighth-place finish in the 400 hurdles (1:06.42). April Sigmund took 11th in the 400-meter dash (1:01.11).

Simpson returns to action Saturday, April 9 at the Cornell Invitational in Mount Vernon.
