Simpson swimmers earn first win against Franklin
CEDAR RAPIDS - Catherine Mayes won the 200-yard individual medley, the Storm added five second-place finishes and the Simpson women's swimmers split a double-dual against Coe and Franklin on Friday night.
Mayes added a second-place performance in the 100-yard backstroke and Keely Goshia earned two second-place finishes for the Storm (1-6), who picked up their first dual win of the season, 41-37 over Franklin. Simpson dropped a 75-36 decision to Coe in the double-dual.
Mayes swam away from the pack in the 200 IM, posting a 2:32.62. Coe's Kelly Strohm touched the wall nearly four seconds later.
In the 100 backstroke, Mayes completed the race in 1:12.91, placing second of four competitors.
Keely Goshia took second in the 100 butterfly (1:09.74) and the 100 breaststroke (1:19.62). Anna Aldridge finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:13.09) and Erin Gerken came in second in the 500 freestyle (6:16.38).
Simpson placed second in both relays, as Mayes, Gerken, Goshia and Aldridge swam a 2:13.55 in the 200 medley relay and Aldridge, Gerken, Mayes and Stacy Sturlaugson swam a 1:54.61 in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Storm won't be in action again until Jan. 15 when they host Coe and Iowa Central in a double dual beginning at 1 p.m.
