Short-handed Simpson wrestlers fall to Buena Vista

STORM LAKE - Despite forfeiting three weights, the Simpson wrestlers won 5 of 7 contested matches in a 28-23 Iowa Conference loss against Buena Vista on Wednesday night.

Coming into the week, head coach Clint Manny wanted to see more aggression and intensity from his team. With two wins by fall and a major decision, he was pleased with the response.

"We had two really good practices this week and the guys did everything I asked tonight," Manny said. "Any time you get bonus points it means you're attacking."

Sophomore 157-pounder Cory Stratton picked up his team-leading 19th win of the season when he pinned Codey Schultz in 3:41. Freshman Justin Bruce won by fall as well, pinning Dez Broeg in 4:57 at 165 pounds.

"Our young guys wrestled very well tonight," Manny said.

Another freshman, Derek Entz picked up a major decision as time ran out at 141 pounds, beating Tim Vore 9-1.

Senior Caleb Brus handled Tylar Parker at 149 pounds, 13-9, and senior 174-pounder Jordy Ammons earned an 11-6 decision over Casey Paprocki.

Simpson's two contested losses came at 184 pounds and heavyweight. Joe Klinkel beat Tanner Erdman 14-4 at 184 and Matt Sefcik won by fall over Jared Bevins at heavyweight. Simpson didn't have wrestlers for 125, 133 or 197.

The Storm (2-8, 0-3 IIAC) travel to Pella this weekend for the Central Invitational.
