WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Simpson softball team started play at the 2014 Rebel Spring Games by winning its first two games, beating Mitchell 6-2 on Friday morning and Roger Williams 7-1 in the afternoon.
The Storm (7-1) face Roger Williams again tomorrow at 2 p.m./1 Central. The day starts against Wheaton (Ill.) at 10 a.m./9 Central.

GAME 1: SIMPSON 6, MITCHELL 2
Abbie Van Vleet struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings and Tori Haag drove in two runs on a single in a big fifth inning for the Storm. An RBI single by Britney Steele in the fifth broke a scoreless tie as the first five batters reached en-route to a six-run inning. Haag went 2-for-2 at the plate and Emma Negrete finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Van Vleet allowed one earned run.
GAME 2: SIMPSON 7, ROGER WILLIAMS 1
Ashley Prettyman had three hits, Negrete drove in two and Kaytlyn Ernst held Roger Williams to three hits in five innings. Hailey Jensen drove in a run in the first and Negrete's two-RBI single in the second gave Simpson a 3-0 lead. It was more than enough breathing room for Ernst, who struck out seven to improve to 3-1 on the year.
