Van Vleet named IIAC Athlete of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Simpson softball player Abbie Van Vleet hit .556 and went 3-0 in the circle in six games last week, earning Iowa Conference Position Player and Female Athlete of the Week honors for the period ending Sunday, March 9.

A sophomore from Indianola, Iowa who transferred to Simpson from Northern Iowa, Van Vleet went 10-for-18 with two doubles, three triples and nine RBIs in leading Simpson to a 5-1 mark in its first six games at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven, Fla. She also posted a 0.40 ERA with 23 strikeouts.

Van Vleet's biggest games came in wins over Skidmore and Beloit. In a 12-2, 5-inning win over Skidmore, Van Vleet came within an RBI of setting the school single-game record, going 3-for-3 with a double, two triples and six RBIs. In a 2-0 win over Beloit, she tossed a one-hitter and went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in a run and scoring the other. She carried a perfect game into the seventh inning of that contest.

The Storm - who had the day off on Tuesday - are currently 10-4 on the season and return to action Wednesday, March 12 when they take on Mount St. Joseph and Defiance in Winter Haven, Fla.
