Storm place second at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON - The Simpson men's track and field team placed second of 13 teams at the Cornell Invitational on Saturday, watching three athletes take home first place honors.

Simpson scored 113 points, nine points behind meet champion Grand View with 122. Grinnell and William Penn tied for third with 79 points each.

John Cord won the triple jump, Matt Stone won the 800 meters and Ryan Edwardson won the 5,000 meters for the Storm.

"We had a great team effort today and took advantage of the weather to get some good work in," head coach Dave Cleveland said. "We had a lot of kids trying new events and it was great to see them have fun and succeed at the same time."

Cord placed in the top three in three events on the day. He won the triple jump with an effort of 40-5 1/2 and took second in the long jump (20-6 1/4). He placed second in the javelin throw with a toss of 163-6, competing in the event for the first time in his career. He also took sixth in the high jump (5-11 1/2).

Stone's first-place effort in the 800 meters was a personal best, crossing the finish line in 1:58.83. Edwardson also set a personal best in the 5,000 meters, winning the event in 15:16.71.

Ted Heying earned Simpson's other top-three finish with a third-place effort in the 100-meter high hurdles (16.60).
