Simpson takes advantage of opportunities in 3-0 win

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Goals from Nate Van Horn, Chris Capper and John Heffernan propelled the Simpson men's soccer team to a 3-0 win against Millikin on Monday.

Despite being outshot 19-13, the Storm (2-1) took advantage of the opportunities they were given in coming away with their second home victory of the season. Simpson put seven shots on goal to Millikin's 19, but benefitted from an opportunistic defense. Freshman goalkeeper Luke Aronow (Ankeny, Iowa) made 11 saves in his first career shutout.

Van Horn (Norwalk, Iowa) got the scoring started 8:30 into the contest. Lucas Haack (Ankeny, Iowa) found the junior from eight yards out on the right wing for the goal. The 1-0 lead stood through the half.

The insurance goal came in the 68th minute off the foot of Capper (Davenport, Iowa) thanks to a great run by Mark Lahart (Newton, Iowa). Lahart beat his defender on the right wing and slotted a pass into the box for Capper, who struck the one-timer into the left side of the goal.

A red card in the 78th minute from Millikin goalkeeper Derrek Schwartz resulted in Simpson's third goal. The keeper received a red card in the penalty box, allowing freshman John Heffernan (Ankeny, Iowa) to convert on the penalty kick.

The Big Blue (1-1) got four shots from Max Huschen on the day.

Simpson returns to action Friday, Sept. 10 when it travels to Wisconsin to face Concordia at 5 p.m.
