Swain reaches milestone, Simpson falls to Loras in season finale

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Charles Swain reached the 1,000-point plateau in his final game but the Simpson men's basketball team lost to Loras 89-71 on Saturday.

DJ Dafney had 11 points, eight rebounds and Leif Olson added a career-high 19 points for the Storm (6-19, 1-13 Iowa Conference).

Swain landed on the milestone exactly, scoring 15 points to finish with 1,000 career points. The 19th player in Simpson history to reach the mark, Swain entered the club when he hit a pull-up 3 on the left wing with 5:28 left.

Mirko Grcic had 23 points, 14 rebounds and Aaron Schueller and Nathaniel Smith each had 17 points for the Duhawks (10-15, 5-10).

Simpson trailed by nine at halftime but pulled within 52-51 on a Dafney jumper with 11:08 to play.

A three-point play by Justin VanWambeke and a Justin Schneider layup extended the lead to 57-51, though, as Loras held a two possession lead for the remainder of the game.

Simpson got out to an early seven-point, first-half lead thanks to dead-eye shooting from Olson, who made his first five shots. He scored Simpson's first six points as the Storm opened up a 12-5 lead.

Olson went 5-for-6 from the field in the first half and finished 8-for-13 on the game.

Following two free throws by Swain, Loras mounted an 11-0 run triggered by three straight 3s, two from Smith. Smith's first 3 gave Loras a 13-12 lead with 13:02 to play and it never trailed again.

NOTES

Three seniors took the floor for the final time in a Simpson uniform: Swain, P.J. Edwards and Carlton Moody, Jr. … nothing more than pride was on the line as both Loras and Simpson were left outside of the Iowa Conference Tournament field.
