Storm drop homecoming game to Kohawks

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Wyatt Schaben and Zach Truitt combined for 29 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss, but the Simpson College football team couldn't muster enough offense in a 28-0 loss to RV Coe.

The Kohawks (6-1, 4-1 A-R-C) scored a touchdown in each quarter and came away with three interceptions, including two in the endzone, to spoil the Storm's homecoming game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Coe got off to a quick start, scoring six points on a 61-yard reception by Zamari Bruce on the team's first drive of the day.
  • Simpson's defense led by Wyatt Schaben, Zach Truitt and Nicholas Warrington held the Kohawks in check on their next few possessions, but the guests managed to go ahead 14-0 via another long touchdown midway through the second quarter. Trenton Barnes hauled in a 41-yard pass from Carter Maske for the score.
  • The Storm (2-4, 1-3 A-R-C) had their best offensive opportunity of the half with just over a minute left. Following a muffed punt recovered by Caleb Heidrick, J Jensen III completed three straight passes to set up 1st and goal from the 6-yard line. Simpson came up empty however, as Chase Kruse made a diving interception in the endzone.
  • The two defenses continued to shine in the third quarter as neither team could get anything going offensively, resulting in six combined punts. The Kohawks finally got some momentum late in the quarter thanks to a 36-yard gain by Barnes. The junior running back had four additional carries for a total of 22 yards before Maske and Bruce connected for another score as time expired.
  • Trailing 21-0, Simpson opened the fourth quarter with a methodical drive fueled by seven Jensen completions of 10 yards or less. The Storm made it all the way down to the visitor 29 before Mitchell Eckardt tallied another interception for the Kohawks to end the possession.
  • Coe put together a long drive of its own following the pick, with Ray Seidel capping off the 13-play, 88-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.
  • Simpson got the ball back with 2:28 remaining and drove 73 yards before the Kohawks stamped the victory with another interception in the endzone, this time by Nathan Schlichting.
