Four football players named academic all-district

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Simpson football players Trey Chumbley, Galen Gist, Nathan Hawkins and Ryan Lehr recently earned 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District 8® First Team honors, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Twenty-seven players were named to the District 8 Team, which includes student-athletes attending NCAA Division III institutions in 21 states and Canada. Simpson had the most selections of any American Rivers Conference school and tied Hardin-Simmons for the most in the district.

2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District Football Team

Trey Chumbley
A junior defensive end from Grimes, Iowa, Chumbley carries a 3.77 cumulative GPA as a computer science major. The second team all-conference pick made 50 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in 2018.

Galen Gist
A fifth-year senior linebacker from Kansas City, Mo., Gist maintains a 3.84 cumulative GPA as a biology major. He missed the 2017 season due to injury, but came back for his final year of eligibility in 2018. He had 41 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Nathan Hawkins
A senior punter from Solon, Iowa, Hawkins maintains a 3.91 cumulative GPA as a computer science and computer information systems double-major. The school record holder for career punting average earned first team all-conference honors and landed on the D3football.com All-West Region Third Team. His 40-yard average led the A-R-C and ranked 10th in Division III in 2018.

Ryan Lehr
A senior safety from Indianola, Iowa, Lehr maintains a 3.86 cumulative GPA in psychology. A first team all-conference pick in 2018, Lehr also earned Academic All-District honors as a junior in 2017. His four interceptions and 11 pass breakups gave him 15 passess defended, third-most in the American Rivers Conference.

The 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Football Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if necessary) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December.
