Football staff to host free youth camp Saturday in Des Moines

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The football coaching staff at Simpson College will host a free youth football camp at Evelyn Davis Park in Des Moines on Saturday, June 23.

The camp will be held from 1-3 p.m. and is open to children in grades K-8.

A Des Moines native, Storm head coach Matt Jeter is looking to give back to the community he knows as home.

"One of our program goals is to impact men," Jeter said. "As a program, I wanted to give back to my hometown and help plant seeds of excellence in these young kids' hearts."

Jeter attended grade school at King Elementary in Des Moines, just down the road from Evelyn Davis Park. He went on to Roosevelt High School, where he was a heavily recruited football talent. He transferred to Simpson for his junior and senior seasons, helping the Storm to a 22-2 record from 1996-97. Simpson qualified for the NCAA Division III Playoffs both seasons.

"I was afforded every opportunity that I have today through education and the game of football," Jeter said. "This is a win-win for Simpson College, Storm Football, and Des Moines, as we foster lifelong partnerships with Des Moines and promote education through the sport of football."

Jeter enters his third season as Simpson's head coach in 2018. He previously coached at Central Missouri, Drake and Des Moines Lincoln HS.

Camp registration will take place at Evelyn Davis Park, 1400 Forest Ave., Des Moines.
