Volleyball splits on final day of Prairie Wolf Invite

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Simpson volleyball team closed the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolf Invitational Saturday with a pair of five-set matches, edging Westminster (Mo.) and falling to the host Prairie Wolves.

The Storm (3-4) got out to two set leads in each match before dropping the next two. Simpson was able to rally in the deciding set against Westminster but couldn't hold off Nebraska Wesleyan's rally.

Jacque Luth led the way with 29 kills on the day while Hannah Lester was the percentage leader, hitting .283 with 23 kills. Katrina Hartman had nine total blocks, Alyssa Mathews handed out 78 assists and Morgan Taylor had a team-high 33 digs.

Westminster Match
Simson trailed 5-0 in the deciding fifth set before mounting a 9-4 run to tie the set 9-9. The Storm then trailed 13-12 before getting kills from Luth, Taylor and Hartman to close out the win. Luth led the way with 15 kills in the match while Lester and Taylor had 12 apiece. Hartman finished with four blocks and Matthews had 37 assists.

Nebraska Wesleyan Match
The Storm came out hot, hitting .379 in the first two sets, both 25-14 wins. But Nebraska Wesleyan responded, holding Simpson to just -.022 the rest of the way. Luth (14), Taylor (13) and Lester (11) all finished with double figure kills while Lester hit .308. Matthews had 41 assists.

Notables
• With her 29 kills Saturday, Luth increases her career total to 917 as she looks to become the 16th player in school history to reach the 1,000-kill milestone.
• Just seven matches into the season, Simpson is 1-2 in five-set matches. The Storm played in just one in all of 2016, a 3-2 win against Dubuque on Sept. 30.
